Top of the Cape Florida Lighthouse
Here is a close up look at the detail of the top of the Cape Florida Lighthouse located at the Southernmost point of Key Biscayne. There is a spiral staircase that leads one up from the beach to the top where the view of Key Biscayne and the beaches and Biscayne Bay is unsurpassed.
This picture was taken at dusk on yet another picture perfect day.

It is possible during the course of the day to take a self guided tour and get to walk up top of the Key Biscayne Cape Florida lighthouse and have one of the most wonderful views out towards the Gulf Stream. Looking east, it is possible to see the Fowey Rocks lighthouse which is the lighthouse that was built in the late 1800's to replace the Cape Florida lighthouse as a more modern and reliable navigation tool for mariners since the Fowey Rocks lighthouse is some 5 miles offshore nearly due east of the Cape Florida lighthouse and is situated on a underwater shelf where the water level drops from 25 feet deep to several hundred feet deep.
That 5 miles between Fowey Rocks and Cape Florida does not get any deeper than 30 feet deep and for the large vessels of years gone by that would draw over 30' while underway, that area was certainly a hazard with many ships running aground much to the surprise of the captain of the vessel who would wrongly believe that if he kept his vessel in the gulf stream 5 miles offshore from Key Biscayne and the Cape Florida lighthouse, that he would have plenty of water. Another thought to bear in mind is that Key Biscayne and the Cape Florida lighthouse is between 6 - 10 miles offshore of the mainland of the State of Florida so ultimately as vessels were navigating from South America or from the lower Keys headed north up the coast of Florida, they would be staying between 15 - 20 miles off the coast of Florida and it is really only at this particular point, at the Fowey Rocks lighthouse, where there is a massive hidden hazard. Once north of Fowey Rocks lighthouse, even by just a few hundred yards, vessels would once again be in safe water.
With cloudy, rainy, overcast, or other types of inclement weather, it would be virtually impossible to guage the exact distance from the Cape Florida lighthouse to the edge of underwater shelf and it was for these reasons that the Cape Florida lighthouse on Key Biscayne was de-commissioned in 1876. Nevertheless, due to the tireless efforts of countless individuals to restore the Cape Florida lighthouse to its original glory, it is possible to see the attention to detail and the outstanding craftsmanship that was put into the construction of the Cape Florida lighthouse.
