Developing Key Biscayne 1929 / 1950
Pictures of Key Biscayne during the early days of development.
The 'road' through the coconut plantation that became Crandon Boulevard. 1928
Fast forward 20 years to when the Mackle Brothers starting developing large swaths of land into the modern day streets that we enjoy, you will see the progress on a section of the neighborhood below. It was only after the owner of the entire island of Key Biscayne ceded over to Miami the entire northern third of the island of Key Biscayne, that developers such as the Mackle Brothers bought up 500 acre lots for development. Prior to that time, Key Biscayne was only accessible by boat. After the city of Miami built the bridges that connected the island of Key Biscayne to the mainland, the city also built a zoo, a park for the children which included a skate rink, and a couple of rides, but the big attraction remained the beaches of Crandon Park.
The corner located at 610 Ridgewood Road. The date on the picture on the right is 1950.
